Sponsored Children
Maria lives in Bulera village near Bukeka school with her parents.  She has 2 sisters and 2 brothers and the family works on their small plot of land earning what little money they have by subsistence farming.  The family is very poor and the sponsorship enables Maria to go to school which she enjoys.
Christopher is one of the poorest children we met.  He is an orphan and lives with his very young aunt  and 4 other children in little more than a shack at the local trading centre in Bulera village, which is near the school.  He was dressed only in rags and before he would let us photograph him he disappeared inside with his aunt and came out wearing her t-shirt.  Christopher loves school and is very happy to be sponsored which means his aunt does not have to find money for his schooling.

Peter lives in a rural area with his father.  His mother is not around.  He lives opposite his very elderly grandmother near the school.  Eddie his brother is not sponsored yet but it would help enormously if he was.  As with all of these children Peter and Eddie's family are very poor and cannot afford school fees.  Sponsorship for these children makes such a difference.

Jacob is one of the original pupils at Kavule Parents School for the Deaf and we first met him in 1999.  Jacob is profoundly deaf and has other learning difficulties.  He is an orphan and lives with his uncle who has no work and is very poor.  Being sponsored enables Jacob to attend school and mix with other deaf children which means they can communicate with each other by using sign - impossible for them to do at home.  We met his uncle who is very supportive of the school and very grateful for the sponsorship that Jacob receives.

Mary is deaf and was very shy during our visit.  She is one of the youngest at the school at 8 years old.  She has 4 brothers and 3 sisters and when not at school lives with her grandmother.  Because she is deaf she prefers to be at school with other deaf children which enables them to communicate and does not set her apart from the children in her village where she tends to be picked on. Mary would like to become a sign language teacher and sponsorship may well give her that opportunity in the future.

Mary is 14, is deaf and through sponsorship is able to attend Kavule School.   When not at school she lives with her uncle who is very poor on limited income. Mary enjoys sign language, maths and science and would like to become a secretary or a teacher.  Mary told us that because she is deaf she is always last in the pecking order for food, clothing and education and therefore loves to be at school where she feels happy with her deaf friends.
The children shown here are just the tip of the iceberg.  So far at Building Brighter Futures we are sponsoring 56 children at both of the schools.  There are many, many more who need sponsorship and whose lives could be so different with a little financial help from people like us.

If you would like to know more about any of the children we have for sponsorship please email us at info@buildingbrighterfutures.co.uk and we would be pleased to send you information.  You can help by sponsorship, fund-raising, or just by making a donation and if you would like to be involved with Building Brighter Futures we would be very happy to talk to you.
