PROJECT E.G.G.S. (Educational Goals Gains Sustainability)
Project EGGS is just that! A project about producing eggs, which, when sold will provide much needed income for Kavule Parents School for the Deaf. But how many eggs are we talking about and how much is it going to cost to set up? The honest answer to both questions is lots!
Over a year ago Sam Kateu, the Director of Kavule School, suggested that a chicken farming project would provide much needed income and a few weeks after that suggestion he sent us a proposal outlining the planning and costing of this project.
Whilst we agreed that an income generating project was necessary, this particular proposal came at a time when we were fund raising for the childrens dormitory and the efforts of everyone involved in BBF were very much centred on that project.
However, the dormitory is now complete and currently BBF has agreed to fully sponsor the school for a year up to April 2008 to help with their running costs which exceed their income. We are now ready to launch our Chicken Project, entitled EGGS (Educational Goals Gains Sustainability).
So what do we need to do? We need to build a large chicken house, sufficient to house around 2,000 laying chickens. It has to be equipped with sufficient nesting boxes, feeding equipment, heat lamps and other miscellaneous equipment, and it has to be secure. It will need storage facilities for food, water harvesting, compound fencing and electricity.
We then need to purchase 2,000 laying chickens and they will require feeding and vaccination. Then we have to staff it, pay for specialist advice and administer the project. All in all we need about £16,000 to get the project underway.
If we can achieve this, the income from the project should be sufficient to run the school which has no funding whatsoever from any organisation or educational authority in Uganda.
It is another tall order, but we built the dormitory and we are sure we can achieve this, but not without a lot of hard work and fund raising. Without it the school will not be able to operate and they will continue to look to BBF for funding. On that basis if we are continually having to raise money to keep the school going, then surely it is logical to raise sufficient money to get this project off the ground and then we can continue to support the school by other means.
Please help us by donating whatever you can or coming on board to help with the fund raising. Perhaps you could consider arranging your own fund-raising events and we can assure you that BBF will help wherever it can.
Through the efforts of BBF and its supporters we have achieved great things but it never stops and we are determined that it doesnt but we cant do it without your help.
